Hi, I am Darshit Nayak, an Independent Singer/Songwriter from Ahmedabad.
I hope you are reading this bio because you have listened to my music on my facebook page or youtube, If that’s not the case then to begin with, my most notable work so far is “Tum Hi Ho Cover”, which is amongst the popular versions of this song on youtube, and has got more than 6,00,000 views till now. Thanks to that video, my youtube channel has viewership of 1.2 millions now.
Singing cover versions was never in my mind, I started publishing my own songs on the internet in 2010, though I received positive response from those who listened to my tracks, I was still not able to reach wider audience, in the meanwhile I released one of my songs “Baakhuda” commercially on itunes, hungama.com, nokia ovi, artistaloud.com, even then my work was not spreading as much as I would have liked. Earning money through music is secondary, independent music scenario in India has been so bad in the past that “people don’t even consider listening to new artists seriously if they are doing non bollywood music, but luckily artists today have got something which they did not have few decades back – “The Internet”.
Acknowledging the challenges ahead of me, and by being inspired by some artists who were getting popular by making cover versions of bollywood songs, finally I decided that in order to get public attention, I will have to make full use of the internet(youtube videos), and within 3 months I was able to reach 10 times more number of people by doing bollywood covers than I did in 3 years doing my original songs. Some bands are strictly against covers, I have different view on this, anything which helps you reach out to more people and is morally correct, should be done. There isn’t much fun risking your career relying on those 50 listeners who are going to attend your gig. Financial success is important, and for that we need more and more people who like to listen to our music.
It was my passion to become a singer-composer that drove me from being a Computer Engineer, doing Java & C programming to Sound Editing & Digital audio workstations. I started composing when I was in 2nd year of my college, back then I had no idea about music production, slowly and steadily my interest in engineering started fading away and my curiosity to learn new things started showing me the ways in which I could learn & set up a small recording environment at home.
By the time my education was over, I was having decent knowledge of recording softwares, virtual instruments & plugins. I started putting songs written, composed & sung by me on facebook, within short span of time I now had a few articles covered in local newspapers and magazines, which may be common for some artists now, but back then, it felt like winning an award, more importantly, it gave me much needed motivation to continue on the same path.
I have learned a lot of things during these years, trial for reality show, sending demos to record labels, getting my music on internet radios etc, and one change that has occured over the years is that rather than waiting for something to happen or for the opportunity to arrive, I am working towards creating that opportunity for myself. Because there are so many talented artists out there, everyone is waiting for their chance, everyone has dreams, everyone’s mother has this faith that one day my son/daughter will realize his/her dream. I don’t think it would be wise to leave it on chance that I am the lucky one and someday, somebody will recognize me. I have been working hard in earning little amount of money to produce my own songs and videos all these years, and I released my 1st music video “Teri Yaadein” on my own, in June 2014, which received good response. Next challenge is to find a way to keep releasing videos of my original songs, budget constraint is always an issue and it won’t be possible to produce movie quality videos on my own, I am solely relying on my music in which I have tremendous amount of faith. The “big break” that everyone waits for, doesn’t come that easily or even worse, might not come at all, but that won’t break my confidence. I have got one life and I am going to give it all… I may not be the best… but someone once said – “Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later, the man who wins is the man who thinks he can.”
So, I would like you to be a part of my journey if you’ve liked my work, I always try to respond to messages and emails sent to me, would love to hear from you. Stay connected!
